Before You Book
What to Ask Before You Book Your Wedding Videographer
These aren’t gotcha questions. They’re the ones that separate a videographer who has a real plan for your day from one who’s hoping nothing goes wrong. Ask them of anyone you’re considering, us included.
Comparing Multiple Videographers Fairly
01 / 04
What am I actually comparing between two quotes?
A lower price typically signals less experience. Older gear. Someone who is part-time. While it can mean less coverage or fewer deliverables, those things don’t matter as much as experience when you’re talking about a once-in-a-lifetime event. That expertise is invaluable.
Can I see a full wedding film, not just a highlight reel?
Highlight reels are curated to impress. A full-length film shows you their actual pacing, storytelling, and consistency start to finish.
Will the same person I’m talking to now actually film my wedding?
Some studios book consultations with one person and send a different shooter on the day. Confirm who’s actually behind the camera before you sign.
Backup Gear & Redundancy
02 / 04
What happens if a camera or card fails mid-ceremony?
A professional setup includes backup cameras, dual card slots, and a plan for equipment failure. This should never be an afterthought.
Is there a backup videographer if something happens to you?
Illness, emergencies, and last-minute conflicts happen. Ask what the contingency plan looks like.
Does the videographer carry liability insurance?
Many venues now require proof of vendor insurance before they’ll allow filming. If your videographer doesn’t carry it, that can become your problem to solve days before the wedding.
What’s the plan if weather forces the day outdoors-to-indoors, or vice versa?
Ceremonies move locations last-minute more often than couples expect. Ask how coverage and shot planning adapt when the plan changes an hour before go-time.
Raw Footage Rights
03 / 04
Do I own the raw footage, or only the final edit?
Some videographers only deliver the finished film and keep raw footage. Others include it, or offer it as an add-on. Know which one you’re getting before you sign.
How long is raw footage retained after the wedding?
Storage policies vary widely. Ask how long files are kept and what happens if you want them years later.
Package Deliverables
04 / 04
What’s actually included, and what costs extra?
Ceremony and reception cuts, second shooter coverage, drone footage, and rush delivery are often add-ons. Get a clear, itemized breakdown before comparing pricing.
What’s the turnaround time for my final film?
Ask for a realistic delivery window, and what happens if it runs past that window.
Are payment plans available?
Many couples don’t pay their full investment upfront. Ask whether a payment plan exists and how it’s structured.
Who owns the music and licensing used in my film?
Unlicensed music can force a re-edit before your film can be shared publicly. Ask how music is sourced and cleared.
What happens if my wedding date changes?
Postponements happen. Ask about rescheduling policy and whether your retainer transfers to a new date.
Can I request specific music styles, or flag music I don’t want in my film?
Editing style is often assumed, not discussed. A quick conversation upfront avoids getting a final film that doesn’t match your taste.
If any of this raises a question specific to your day, that’s exactly what a discovery call is for. No pressure, just a conversation about your vision and what coverage actually fits it.
